Cindy Appaloosa Adult - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Danville, Pennsylvania

Cindy is an approximately 15 year old female appaloosa. She came to the Pennsylvania SPCA in May of 2017 through a cruelty case with several other horses. She was underweight and had a mild case of slipperfoot, though we knew right away she was extra special. Cindy suffers from a common appaloosa ailment called moonblindness and is completely blind. She wears a special mask year round to block out UV light and protect her eyes.

When we arrived to pick her up to bring her back to our shelter, we were hesitant, would she be able to get on the trailer, would she lead on a lead rope, would she rear up or stop walking all together as is common in blind scared horses.Cindy changed all of our perceptions of blind horses, that day and every day since then. She follows well on a lead rope, and trusts you not to run her into things, she knows the words "whoa" "back" and "step" and they help her know what to expect while on a lead. She trailers, and unloads from the trailer easily and has been a fantastic buddy to all the horses on our property. She runs and jumps and never seems to have a problem navigating her 1/2 acre paddock, she even knows exactly where the gates are and knows where to wait for dinner. There are times our staff have joked that maybe she can see since she navigates so well. When investigating a new paddock, Cindy does explore with her nose, smelling and nuzzling, because of that, she does need a home with solid fences, a strand or two of electric in additional to the solid fences is ok as she will learn to walk around with her nose at a height so as to not catch the electric strands. She does need a buddy, whether that buddy is a horse or a pony, or maybe even a donkey, Cindy relies on her pasture mates to help her identify her surroundings, food sources, shelter and to identify "threats", should there ever be any. Cindy could also be a buddy, she is friendly and social with other horses and people, allows grooming and leads easily. She isn't particularly fond of farrier work, but we suspect its due to lack of consistency and training and would be quickly rectified in a home. Because of Cindy's blindness, we are looking for an adopter or foster that is willing to house her until we can identify an adopter or sanctuary willing to take her on. She is a very sweet and gentle horse and will quickly show you that being blind isn't a disability, rather just a way to show off her other super powered senses.
